In Person Only – NOT recorded
This master class will focus on side writing as a way of getting to know your characters better. We’ve probably all done writing exercises that have us create biographical sketches–but characters can’t be reduced to physical descriptions and lists of character traits. They don’t exist in isolation from a story. Characters are developed and revealed by what they say and do—in other words, through scenes, dialogue, and conflict.
So much of the work of character development happens on an intuitive level, through the writing process—and this is where side writing can help. Through writing exercises involving scenes, interviews, letters or journal entries, we will get to know the people we are writing about—and because character and story are linked, we may solve some of our story problems along the way. Side writing doesn’t have to be polished–it’s about process, not product, so you can think of it as private conversations between you and the people who are populating your
fictional world. Come prepared to write and discuss!
